Linking entities

Attach creations to a session as planned, backup, or reference material so prep stays organized.

Connected content is useful content

An NPC alone: “Mira Thornwood, bartender”

An NPC linked:

  • Works at -> The Rusty Anchor
  • Friend -> Captain Aldric
  • Informant for -> Thieves Guild
  • Connected to -> “The Smuggling Ring” Campaign Marker

Now you know where to find her, who she knows, who she works for, and what story she’s part of.

When you open an creation, you see what’s connected:

  • Open a location -> see who lives there
  • Open an NPC -> see where they work, who they know
  • Open a Campaign Marker -> see who’s involved
  • Open a Session -> see all prepared content

Build a living world

Linked creations form a web. The Connection Map visualizes this. Patterns emerge:

  • Central characters appear as hubs
  • Story arcs form clusters
  • Missing connections become visible

Relationships

Relationship links connect creations with typed, meaningful connections:

Link TypeExample
SocialNPC -> ally -> NPC
HierarchicalNPC -> leader -> Faction
LocationNPC -> works at -> Location
StoryCampaign Marker -> involves -> NPC

Relationships appear in the Connection Map and help you understand your world’s structure.

Faction membership is not a relationship link - add an NPC to the faction’s member list on the faction page instead.

Sessions link to content you’ll use:

FieldLinks To
Prepared NPCsNPCs featuring in the session
Prepared LocationsLocations the party might visit
Prepared ItemsItems that might appear
Prepared EncountersChallenges you’ve planned
Campaign Markers to IntroduceNew threads to seed
Campaign Markers to ResolveActive threads that might conclude

Session links create a checklist of everything you need.

Hierarchical relationships within creation types:

Parent -> ChildExample
Location -> LocationCity -> District -> Building -> Room
Campaign Marker -> Campaign MarkerMain quest -> Sub-quests
Faction -> Sub-factionGuild -> Local chapter

These create navigable hierarchies.

From the creation form

Most creations have dedicated link fields:

  1. Open the creation
  2. Find the relevant field (e.g., “Related NPCs”, “Location”, “Faction Affiliations”)
  3. Click Add or Link
  4. Search for the target creation
  5. Select and save

Creating relationships

For relationship links:

  1. Open either creation
  2. Scroll to the Relationships section
  3. Click Add Relationship
  4. Start typing in the Link to box - an autocomplete searches the whole campaign. Pick the target creation. (Not created yet? Click Create New Creation to make and link it in one step.)
  5. Pick the relationship type. The dropdown only shows types valid for the two creation types you’re connecting, and pre-fills a sensible default.
  6. The bidirectional box auto-checks for mutual types (ally, enemy, friend, rival, family, romantic, partner, knows). A bidirectional link applies both ways from this single entry.
  7. Optionally set strength, add a description, or override the sentiment.
  8. Click Add

From sessions

When preparing a session:

  1. Open the Session
  2. In each prepared content section, click Add
  3. Search and select creations
  4. They’re now linked to the session

On an creation’s page, the Suggested Relationships section proposes connections you may have missed:

  • Name-match suggestions look for other creations mentioned in this creation’s description - no subscription needed. Accept or dismiss each one.
  • AI-assisted suggestions read the broader campaign context and propose links with a confidence score; accept, dismiss, or save for later. (These require an AI subscription - Companion or Power.)

See the relationships guide for details.

Create these as you build creations:

Every NPC should have:

  • Location (where do they live/work?)
  • At least one relationship to another NPC
  • Faction if they belong to one

Every Location should have:

  • Parent location (if part of a larger place)
  • Inhabitants (who’s there?)

Every Campaign Marker should have:

  • Related NPCs (who’s involved?)
  • Related locations (where does it happen?)

Before each session:

  • Link all NPCs who might appear
  • Link all locations players might visit
  • Link relevant Campaign Markers
  • Link encounters you’ve prepared

Story links

As your campaign develops:

  • Add faction members through each faction’s member list
  • Link items to current owners/locations
  • Link Campaign Markers to each other (quest chains)
  • Link the party to NPCs from their backstory

Use the Connection Map

  1. Open the Connection Map (from any creation’s View Connection Map, then Open Full Connection Map)
  2. Look for orphan creations (no connections)
  3. Look for isolated clusters
  4. Consider how to connect them

Check creations during prep

When reviewing an creation:

  • Does this NPC know anyone else?
  • Is this location connected to a faction?
  • Does this Campaign Marker involve existing NPCs?

After sessions

When updating:

  • New NPC introduced -> link to location, link to other NPCs
  • Relationship formed -> create relationship link
  • Plot advanced -> link to involved creations

Each creation shows its links:

  • Relationship section lists connected creations
  • Related sections show session links, Campaign Markers, etc.
  • The Connection Map shows visual connections

To change a link:

  1. Open the creation
  2. Find the link
  3. Edit the relationship type, strength, or description
  4. Or remove and recreate

To delete a link:

  1. Open the creation
  2. Find the link
  3. Click Remove or the delete icon
  4. A bidirectional relationship is a single link that applies both ways, so removing it clears the connection from both creations at once

The best time to link is when creating an creation:

  • Making an NPC? Link them immediately
  • Creating a location? Add inhabitants
  • Writing a Campaign Marker? Link involved creations

Linking later means you’ll forget.

Prioritize important creations

Not everything needs extensive linking. Focus on:

  • Major NPCs (villain, key allies)
  • Central locations (home base, dungeon)
  • Active Campaign Markers
  • Current session content

Background creations can have minimal links.

Use consistent relationship types

Decide on patterns and stick to them:

  • Always use “works at” for employment
  • Always use “ally” for allied NPCs (not “friend” sometimes)
  • Manage faction membership through the faction’s member list (not a relationship)

Consistency makes filtering and searching useful.

  • Check spelling of search term
  • Creation might be in different type (NPC vs. Faction)
  • Creation might not exist yet - create it first
  • Refresh the page
  • Check you saved after adding the link
  • Check you’re looking in the right section
  • Some link types can be duplicated
  • Remove duplicates manually
  • Check from both sides of the relationship
