Roll20 export
Export character-style campaign material for Roll20 Character Vault JSON or CSV where supported.
This is the reverse of Roll20 import: import reads Roll20 characters as NPCs; export writes your NPCs as Roll20 characters.
What exports
| Campaign Familiar Creation | Becomes | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| NPCs | Roll20 characters | Name, description, and stats when present |
That’s the whole list. Roll20 export is characters only - locations, encounters, and items are not written, because a Roll20 character export has no place for them.
Export options
When you pick Roll20, the wizard adds an options step:
- Output format - choose one:
- JSON - Character Vault - Roll20’s Character Vault format.
- CSV - spreadsheet - a character spreadsheet.
- Include macros - add macro stubs to the characters. This applies to the JSON (Character Vault) output.
Export steps
- Open the campaign you want to export.
- In the campaign’s left navigation, choose Export Campaign.
- Select Roll20.
- Set your options - Output format and Include macros.
- Click Browse… and choose a destination folder.
- Click Export and wait for the summary. The Saved to: line shows the folder you picked.
Where the files land
The export writes a single file into the destination folder you choose:
roll20_export.json- when you pick JSON - Character Vaultroll20_export.csv- when you pick CSV - spreadsheet
Bring the file into Roll20 through its Character Vault import (JSON) or your character-sheet import (CSV).
Troubleshooting
Nothing was written
- Make sure you selected a destination folder in the Browse… step before clicking Export.
- Check that you have write permission for the folder you chose.
My macros aren’t there
- Include macros adds macro stubs to the JSON (Character Vault) output. If you exported CSV, that’s expected - the macro option applies to the JSON format.
Only my NPCs came across
- That’s expected. Roll20 export is character-focused, so it exports NPCs as characters and nothing else. To export locations, encounters, or items, use a different format from the VTT export overview.
