Activating AI
Connect an optional AI subscription, check your quota, and understand what still works without AI active.
How it works
Campaign Familiar is an app you buy once. Owning it gives you the full application - every non-AI feature works with no subscription.
AI features are an optional add-on. If you want AI to help with prep, you can add a monthly AI subscription:
- Companion - $7.99/month - 100 AI generations per month (shown in-app as “AI Companion”)
- Power - $14.99/month - 300 AI generations per month (shown in-app as “AI Power”)
Beta testers get full access, including Power-level AI, at no charge.
You don’t need to provide an API key. When you use an AI feature, the relevant campaign text is sent to the engine provider (Anthropic) to generate the response. Campaign Familiar doesn’t store your campaign data on a server - your campaigns stay on your computer.
Subscribing to AI
You subscribe from inside the app. The Subscription screen opens secure checkout in your browser.
- Open Settings from the sidebar
- Open the Subscription screen
- Choose Companion or Power
- Complete checkout in the browser
- Return to Campaign Familiar - your AI access activates immediately
Once active, you’ll see your current plan, your monthly AI generation quota, and the engine features unlocked across the app.
Managing your subscription
All subscription management happens on the in-app Subscription screen, which opens checkout and the billing portal in your browser.
Viewing status
- Open Settings from the sidebar
- Open the Subscription screen
- View your current plan, quota usage, and renewal date
Upgrading or downgrading
- Open Settings
- Open the Subscription screen
- Click Manage Subscription to open the billing portal in your browser
- Change your plan there
Upgrades take effect immediately and your quota resets to the new plan’s limit. Downgrades take effect at your next billing cycle; you keep your current access until then.
Cancelling
- Open Settings
- Open the Subscription screen
- Click Manage Subscription to open the billing portal
- Cancel from there
You keep AI access until the end of your current billing period. After that, the engine features become unavailable - the rest of the app keeps working.
Your data is never deleted. Campaigns, creations, and relationships remain intact on your computer. Only AI feature access changes.
Quota and pay-as-you-go
Monthly quotas
| Plan | Generations/Month |
|---|---|
| Companion | 100 |
| Power | 300 |
Quotas reset at the start of each billing cycle.
Quota status
Campaign Familiar shows quota status with color indicators:
| Usage | Color | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 0-74% | Green | Normal usage |
| 75-89% | Yellow | Approaching limit |
| 90%+ | Red | Nearly exhausted (blocked at 100%) |
Buying more generations
Pay-As-You-Go top-ups (for the engine Power plan) are not available yet - the Buy More entry points are turned off in the current beta build while credit handling is finished. When enabled, they’ll appear in the quota section of Settings -> Subscription once your monthly quota is used up, in three planned packages:
- Small: 10 for $1.00
- Medium: 50 for $4.00
- Large: 100 for $7.00
Until then, if you run out before the reset, wait for your next billing cycle - or, on Companion, upgrade to AI Power for a larger monthly allowance.
Using Campaign Familiar on more than one computer
Your campaign data is stored locally on each computer. To move a campaign between machines, use export/import:
- Export on the first computer: open a campaign -> campaign sidebar -> Export Campaign -> choose a format -> save the file
- Transfer the file (USB drive, cloud storage, email)
- Import on the second computer: Library -> Import to Library -> select the file -> review and confirm
See Offline access for more on local data and backups.
Offline access
Campaign Familiar works offline using cached subscription data:
| Days Offline | What Happens |
|---|---|
| 0-6 days | Full access, gentle reminder to reconnect |
| 7-13 days | Full access, prominent warning |
| 14+ days | AI features blocked until reconnection |
When you reconnect, Campaign Familiar automatically verifies your subscription.
See Offline access for complete details.
