Subscriptions
Understand the paid app purchase, optional AI subscriptions, monthly generation quotas, PAYG packs, and offline grace period.
AI features are an optional add-on. If you want AI to help with prep, you can add a monthly AI subscription. If you don’t, you keep the complete app and simply don’t see the engine features.
What you get by owning the app
When you own Campaign Familiar, the entire application is yours - no tiers, no generation allowance, no catch:
- Create unlimited campaigns
- All 8 creation types with all their fields
- The full relationship system
- The Connection Map (connection map visualization)
- Session planning and linked content
- Import from Fantasy Grounds (VTT import)
- Export to JSON, Markdown, and CSV
- Search across your whole campaign
- Tags and organization
- Local data storage - your data lives on your computer
None of this requires a subscription. The engine subscription only adds AI generation on top of the app you already own.
Adding AI
AI features require an optional monthly AI subscription. There are two options - Companion and Power - and the difference between them is about what each unlocks, not a generation number.
Both subscriptions unlock the same core AI toolkit: campaign-aware generation, the Session Companion chat, all 8 Quick Prep generators, background suggestions, and access to Campaign Intelligence. Power widens the engine context window (so the engine considers more of your campaign at once) and unlocks a set of deeper-analysis capabilities on top of that shared toolkit. The monthly generation count is a separate usage allowance, not the headline difference.

Pricing and monthly allowance
| Plan | Price | Monthly usage allowance |
|---|---|---|
| Companion (shown in-app as “AI Companion”) | $7.99/month | 100 generations |
| Power (shown in-app as “AI Power”) | $14.99/month | 300 generations |
The generation count is a monthly usage allowance - enough headroom for the tier’s typical workload - not the thing that distinguishes the tiers from one another.
Beta testers get full access, including Power-level AI, at no charge.
Companion - $7.99/month
Best for: Regular prep sessions, campaign-aware generation, brainstorming
- Campaign-aware generation - when you draft material, the engine considers your existing creations, relationships, and story threads, so output fits your world instead of being generic fantasy.
- Session Companion chat - an AI chat for brainstorming, in-session help, and developing ideas through conversation. It detects the creations you mention and offers them as context automatically (add others with the Add context chip).
- Full Quick Prep access - all 8 generators with campaign context enabled.
- Background suggestions - Campaign Familiar analyzes your campaign and suggests potential relationships, forgotten creations, and unresolved plot threads.
- AI context window - Companion assembles up to about 5,000 tokens of your campaign as context for each AI call: recent sessions, active hooks, and party composition.
Monthly allowance: 100 generations - enough for regular prep. A typical session prep might use 10-20 generations.
Power - $14.99/month
Best for: Intensive prep, multiple campaigns, the most sophisticated AI
Everything in Companion, plus a wider AI context window and a set of deeper-analysis capabilities. The lead differentiator is the ~12,000-token context window - more than double Companion’s - so the engine can weigh more of your campaign at once: full session history, character profiles, plot-thread tracking, and faction state. On top of that, Power unlocks:
- Wider AI context window - about 12,000 tokens of campaign context per call (vs ~5,000 on Companion), producing more coherent and connected results.
- Full Proactive Insights with remediation plans - Companion shows the top 5 insights; Power shows the full prioritized list, each with a concrete remediation plan and links to the creations involved.
- Campaign Health Issue Details - Power expands the Campaign Health widget into a full Issue Details list: each issue named, tagged with its dimension, and linked to the creations involved.
- Personalized spotlight suggestions - in Player Engagement, each character gets a personalized per-character suggestion for how to bring them forward next session.
- Detailed preparation checklist - the Next Session widget shows a detailed, priority-sorted preparation checklist rather than just status and counts.
- AI relationship suggestions - identifies subtle connections based on backstory, shared history, and story implications.
- Advanced background suggestions - deeper analysis, including connection hints that surface story opportunities you might have missed.
- Advanced campaign analysis - deeper insights into your campaign’s structure, pacing, and story health.
- Priority AI processing - faster response times during peak usage.
For how these intelligence capabilities appear in the app, see the Campaign Intelligence overview.
Monthly allowance: 300 generations - for power users who prep intensively or run multiple campaigns.
Without an AI subscription
If you don’t have an AI subscription, the engine features are simply unavailable - Quick Prep generation, field-by-field AI generation, Session Companion chat, Campaign Intelligence, Recap analysis, and AI suggestions won’t appear.
Everything else keeps working exactly as before. Owning the app means the full non-AI experience is always yours. You can add an AI subscription whenever you like and remove it just as easily; your data is never affected.
Quota management
How quota works
Each AI action uses one credit from your monthly AI allowance:
- Quick Prep generation: 1 credit
- Field-by-field AI generation: 1 credit
- Session Companion message: 1 credit
Credits reset at the start of each billing cycle.
Quota indicators
Campaign Familiar shows your AI usage with color-coded indicators:
| Usage | Color | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 0-74% | Green | Normal usage |
| 75-89% | Yellow | Approaching limit |
| 90%+ | Red | Nearly exhausted (blocked at 100%) |
When quota is exhausted
If you use all your monthly generations:
- AI features show a quota-exhausted message
- All non-AI features continue working normally
- Your data is unaffected
- Quota resets at your next billing cycle
Wait for the reset at your next billing cycle, or - on Companion - upgrade to AI Power for a larger allowance. (Pay-As-You-Go top-ups are planned but not yet purchasable in the current beta build; see below.)
Pay-as-you-go (payg)
Pay-As-You-Go top-ups will let you buy extra generations before your quota resets, without changing plans. The planned packages (for the AI Power plan) are:
| Package | Generations | Price | Per Generation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small | 10 | $1.00 | $0.10 |
| Medium | 50 | $4.00 | $0.08 |
| Large | 100 | $7.00 | $0.07 |
Not available yet. PAYG purchasing is turned off in the current beta build while credit handling is finished, so the Buy More entry points are hidden and no top-up can be bought right now. Once it’s enabled, packages will appear in the quota section of Settings -> Subscription on the engine Power plan and be used after your subscription quota is exhausted. Until then, exhausting your monthly allowance means waiting for the next billing-cycle reset (Companion users can also upgrade to AI Power for a larger allowance).
Managing your AI subscription
Subscribing and managing happens on the in-app Subscription screen, which opens secure checkout and billing pages in your browser.
Subscribing or upgrading
- Open Settings
- Open the Subscription screen
- Choose Companion or Power
- Complete checkout in the browser
- Your AI access takes effect immediately
Changing or cancelling
- Open Settings
- Open the Subscription screen
- Click Manage Subscription to open the billing portal in your browser
- Change plans or cancel there
Your data is never deleted when you change or cancel. Campaigns, creations, and relationships remain intact. Only AI feature access changes. If you cancel, you keep AI access until the end of the billing period, then the engine features become unavailable - the rest of the app continues to work.
Referral program
The Subscription screen may show your referral link and referral stats below the plan cards. Use Copy referral link to share it; successful referrals can earn account credit or free months when the referral program is active.
Offline and grace periods
Campaign Familiar works offline using cached subscription data. If you lose internet:
| Days Offline | Status |
|---|---|
| 0-6 | Full access with gentle reminder |
| 7-13 | Full access with prominent warning |
| 14+ | AI features blocked until reconnection |
While offline, an Offline badge appears in the app sidebar and your grace-period status shows under Settings -> Usage. When you reconnect, Campaign Familiar automatically verifies your subscription and restores AI access.
See Offline access for details.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to provide my own API key? No. You don’t need to provide an API key. When you use an AI feature, the relevant campaign text is sent to the engine provider (Anthropic) to generate the response. Campaign Familiar doesn’t store your campaign data on any server - your campaigns stay on your computer.
What happens to my data if I cancel my AI subscription? Nothing. Your campaigns and creations remain on your computer, and you keep the full non-AI app. Only the engine features become unavailable.
Can I try AI before committing? The app itself is fully usable without AI. To try AI generation you’ll need an AI subscription (Companion or Power); you can cancel any time.
Is there an annual discount? Check the Campaign Familiar website for current pricing and any available discounts.
What payment methods are accepted? Campaign Familiar accepts major credit cards through our secure payment processor.
