Troubleshooting
Diagnose common Campaign Familiar problems with install, launch, activation, AI, import, export, and local data.
App won’t start
Symptoms
- App doesn’t open at all
- App crashes immediately on launch
- Stuck on loading screen
Solutions
Restart your computer Sometimes a fresh start clears whatever’s blocking the app.
Reinstall Campaign Familiar
- Uninstall the current version
- Download fresh from campaignfamiliar.com/download
- Install and try again
Check for conflicts
- Antivirus software may block Campaign Familiar - add an exception
- VPN software can interfere - try disabling temporarily
- Firewall may block connections - allow Campaign Familiar through
Clear app data (last resort) This resets the app but preserves campaigns:
- Windows: Delete
%LOCALAPPDATA%\campaign-familiar\settings.json - macOS: Delete
~/Library/Application Support/campaign-familiar/settings.json - Linux: Delete
~/.local/share/campaign-familiar/settings.json
AI features not working
”offline” indicator when connected
Check internet connection
- Can you browse websites?
- Try a different network
Check your subscription status
- Go to Settings -> Subscription
- Use Manage Subscription to review or refresh your plan
- Wait for confirmation
Restart the app
- Fully close and reopen Campaign Familiar
- Check AI features again
”quota exhausted”
You’ve used all your monthly AI generations.
Options:
- Wait for quota to reset (next billing cycle)
- Upgrade to a higher tier (Companion -> AI Power) for a larger monthly allowance
- Coming soon: Pay-As-You-Go top-ups on the engine Power plan (the Buy More option is turned off in the current beta build until credit handling is finished)
Generation takes too long
AI requests typically complete in 5-15 seconds. If longer:
- Check your internet connection
- Try a simpler prompt
- Try again later (server load varies)
Poor quality results
Improve your prompts:
- Be more specific
- Include context
- Try different tone presets
- Adjust creativity slider
-> See AI best practices
Subscription issues
”subscription not found”
Verify payment:
- Check email for payment confirmation
- Check your payment method for charges
Refresh status:

- Open Settings -> Subscription and use Manage Subscription

- Contact support with payment confirmation
Data and campaigns
Campaign won’t load
Check for corruption:
- Go to your data folder:
- Windows:
%LOCALAPPDATA%\campaign-familiar - macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/campaign-familiar - Linux:
~/.local/share/campaign-familiar
- Windows:
- Look for backup files (
.backupor dated folders) - Try restoring from backup
Restart Campaign Familiar Sometimes a fresh app start resolves loading issues.
Lost data
Campaign Familiar stores data locally. If data is missing:
Check the data folder Navigate to the paths above. Your campaign data should be there.
Check for backups
Look for .backup files or dated backup folders.
If you exported recently Restore from your JSON backup: Library -> Import to Library -> Campaign Familiar JSON
If no backup exists Unfortunately, local data loss without backups cannot be recovered. Start regular backups.
Import failed
Wrong file/folder selected
- For Fantasy Grounds, select the campaign folder that contains
db.xml. - For Foundry, use the exported Foundry files/folder described in the Foundry import guide.
- For Roll20, select a Character Vault
.jsonor character.csvfile. - For Campaign Familiar JSON restore, select the exported
.jsonfile.
Corrupted source
- Try opening the source in its original app first
- Re-export from the original source
Unsupported version
- Some VTT versions may not be fully supported
- Check documentation for known limitations
Display and interface
Ui looks wrong
Scale/zoom issues:
- Check your system display scaling settings
- Try a different display resolution
Missing elements:
- Try resizing the window
- Reset window position: close app, delete window position from settings
Text is garbled or wrong
Encoding issues:
- Restart the app
- Check that content doesn’t have unusual characters
- Re-import affected content
Dark mode issues
- Toggle the theme off and on using the theme switch at the bottom of the app’s left sidebar
- Restart the app
- Check your system dark-mode settings
Performance
App is slow
Large campaigns:
- Close unused panels
- Filter creation lists instead of scrolling
- Archive old/unused content
System resources:
- Close other applications
- Check available RAM
- Restart your computer
Connection Map slow:
- Filter to show fewer creations
- Use relationship type filters
- Zoom out for better performance
Search is slow
For campaigns with thousands of creations:
- Use more specific search terms
- Filter by creation type before searching
- Consider archiving unused content
Sync and multiple devices
Data not syncing
Campaign Familiar doesn’t sync automatically. Your data is stored locally on each device.
To transfer data between devices:
- Export from device A (open a campaign -> campaign sidebar -> Export Campaign -> JSON)
- Transfer the file (USB, cloud storage, email)
- Import on device B (Library -> Import to Library -> Campaign Familiar JSON)
Platform-specific issues

Antivirus blocks Campaign Familiar: Add Campaign Familiar to your antivirus exceptions/whitelist.
macOS
“Cannot be opened” error: Right-click the app -> Open -> Open Or: System Preferences -> Security & Privacy -> Open Anyway
Catalina+ permission prompts: Grant permissions when prompted (files, network).
Linux
AppImage won’t run:
chmod +x Campaign Familiar.AppImage
Missing dependencies:
sudo apt-get install libfuse2
