Foundry VTT export

Export Campaign Familiar material into Foundry compendium JSON for actors, items, scenes, and journal entries.

This is the reverse of Foundry import: import reads Foundry’s exported JSON; export writes it.

What exports

Campaign Familiar CreationFoundry FileBecomes
NPCsactors.jsonFoundry actors
Locationsscenes.jsonFoundry scenes
Itemsitems.jsonFoundry items

Foundry’s compendium format covers actors, items, and scenes. There’s no separate encounters compendium, so encounters aren’t written to their own file - this mirrors the import side, where Foundry has no direct encounter equivalent.

Export options

When you pick Foundry VTT, the wizard adds an options step:

  • Include images - include image references from your creations.
  • Creation types to export - toggle which types to include:
    • NPCs
    • Locations
    • Items

Leave a type unchecked to skip it.

Export steps

  1. Open the campaign you want to export.
  2. In the campaign’s left navigation, choose Export Campaign.
  3. Select Foundry VTT.
  4. Set your options - Include images and the Creation types to export.
  5. Click Browse… and choose a destination folder.
  6. Click Export and wait for the summary. The Saved to: line shows the folder you picked.

Where the files land

The export writes these files into the destination folder you choose:

  • actors.json - your NPCs
  • scenes.json - your locations
  • items.json - your items

To use them in Foundry, bring these JSON files in through Foundry’s own compendium / JSON import.

Troubleshooting

Nothing was written

  • Make sure you selected a destination folder in the Browse… step before clicking Export.
  • Check that at least one creation type is still toggled on under Creation types to export.
  • Check that you have write permission for the folder you chose.

There’s no encounters file

  • That’s expected. Foundry’s compendium format has no separate encounters compendium, so Campaign Familiar writes no encounters file - your encounters aren’t exported to Foundry.
